Info on Zakynthos/Vassilikos

Zakynthos,

The Turtle Island is one of the most important nesting sites for caretta-caretta turtles in the Mediterranean.
Year after year, the armored sea creatures come back into the bays to bury their eggs in the soft sand.

In 1999, to protect the nesting sites, a Marine National Park was established by the Greek State.
The Venetians, who ruled the island for more than four centuries, named Zakynthos or Zante "Fior di Levante" (Flower of the East)

Cristal blue sea, sloping downwards white cliffs surround by a beautiful sandy bay, in the middle of a stranded ship is Shipwreck Bay, the most popular postcard motif in Greece.
Miles of sandy beaches invite to swim, run boat trips to picturesque caves, and in the hinterland you find quiet villages, ancient monasteries and glistening olive trees everywhere.

Zakynthos Town

With 10,000 inhabitants is located in a wide bay and is dominated by an old Venetian fortress.
After a disastrous earthquake which took place in 1953 the inhabitants managed to restore the historic townscape at least mostly.

Vassilikos,

the southeast tip of the island, offers a mountainous, wooded landscape with many walking and hiking trails. Lush hills alternate with beautiful sandy beaches. There are still no tourist centers but there are water sports centers, many restaurants and beach bars. A large part of the headland is situated in the conservation area, the Marina Park, which serves primarily to protect sea turtles.

Vassilikos is no place in the traditional sense, but a vast rural area with several small town centers.
Vassilikos starts just behind the busy viallge Argassi and extends to Cape Gerakas.
This region is ideal for those seeking tranquility, walks in the still intact nature and, due to the peninsula location, within a radius of about 15 minutes
relaxing bathing pleasures at many beautiful sandy beaches: Mavratzis (nearest beach to Lemon Garden), Dafni, Porto Azzuro, Ionion, Banana Beach, Plaka Beach, Agios Nikolaos (Water), Gerakas and many other small coves.
No nightclubs, but three bars with music are a popular evening meeting place: Villa Rosa, Logos Bar and the Coffee House, only about 5-7 minutes away from the Lemon Garden.
